Singer/songwriter Catie Curtis has been invited to perform at The White House – for the third time – on Saturday night, December 15th. But now she has a brand new album (A Catie Curtis Christmas featuring Elana Arian, Ingrid Graudins and John Jennings) to choose her set list from when she sings for the leader of the free world and his family at their annual holiday open house.
“My wife and kids are coming too,” she shared on her web site. “The times, they are still changing.”
We just had to ask how this super cool opportunity came to be.
How did you get a gig at the White House?
The Director of the White House Office of Visitors, Ellie Schaffer, is a fan of my music. She has invited me to play several times now.
Who else is playing?
Usually there’s a variety of music, kind of like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. There’s choral, orchestra, etc.
Did you meet the President and Michelle? If so, what did they say to you?
I’ve been in the room with the Obamas, and spent some quality time with Bo, the dog, but I have not had the opportunity to meet them face to face.
What was Bo like?
I’m pretty sure he’s a Socialist.
What do you have to go through for clearance to perform?
The band and I have to submit all the info you’d imagine for background checks. This year our fiddle player is pregnant and due in January. We joke that if the baby is born at the White House, this baby will need credentials pronto!
You just played a show with Mary Gauthier, Russell Brand and Sarah Silverman. That must have been fun!
My favorite part of the show (a benefit for Americans United for Separation of Church and State) was discovering how kind and thoughtful Sarah is. First of all, she is a big Mary Gauthier fan and it was awesome to see her starstruck by my dear friend Mary. Sarah didn’t have an entourage, so after the show, I walked her out to her car. I felt like she should have a bodyguard, and I’m so tough, you know? She was so funny we were all dying laughing during her performance, and yet she’s totally unassuming.
Your new album is a Christmas album! Can you tell me a bit about that?
The new CD is the material that we’ve played at the White House; warm, acoustic versions of holiday songs. I totally love Christmas.
Check out Catie’s tour dates for Christmas and beyond.
