Maria Alekhina

Maria Alekina, one of the two members of Russian feminist punk rock collective Pussy Riot serving a two years in prison for “hooliganism” has requested a move to solitary confinement.

Russian prison authorities confirm Alekina has been taken to a “safe cell” to protect her from what she calls “other inmates’ negative attitude” towards her. Alekina claims she was threatened with violence over religious differences.

Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova are serving their sentences in separate labor camps which are reported to have harsh and inhumane conditions. Alekhina, a poet and environmentalist is also mother to a five-year-old son.

The sentence was handed down following a Pussy Riot protest/performance over Putin’s reelection at a Moscow Russian Orthodox church. The government’s response has been criticized worldwide by Amnesty International and various celebrities, including Madonna.
