Charo. Yes, Charo

Charo

Before Sofia Vergara cornered the market on sexy, funny Latin women with a thick accent, there was Charo.

Charo has a long been known as a provocatively-dressed, booty-shaking comedian whose trademark catchphrase is “cuchi cuchi.” She made many television appearances in the ’60s and ’70s including the Today Show, the Tonight Show, the Love Boat and Laugh-In. She married 66-year-old band leader Xavier Cugat, who discovered Charo, when she was only 15.

Although Charo may be a staple of Vegas entertainment and excess, she is also a talented virtuoso flamenco guitarist who studied with Segovia in her native country of Spain.

Today, MEOWgazine celebrates Charo.

    Thank you for posting this! Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza has been a guilty pleasure of mine for a long time. I love her lisping Spanish-from-Spain (I love anybody’s lisping Spanish-from-Spain), and her over-the-top silliness and puns — my favorite is one she brought out again on RuPaul’s Drag Race a couple of seasons ago: “Too much spooning can lead to forking.” =}

    I love the way she knocks your socks off when she plays guitar, and surprises the hell out of the unsuspecting. My favorite song from “Charo and Guitar”, where “En Aranjuez” can be found, is the classic “MalagueƱa”… She’s only 61, and Spanish guitar players seem to last forever, so I can’t even imagine what feats her fingers will rise to next.
