12.12.12 Star Power Neglects Girl Power

December 13, 2012 | 1

121212_logoLast night’s 12.12.12 concert, a televised musical extravaganza to raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy, brought the star power to the cause – but only one woman.

The Who, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Chris Martin, Kanye West, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters were all participants. Sir Paul McCartney even united with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic to reunite Nirvana – sort of – for one song.

Alicia Keys, who performed solo and also with Billy Joel, was the lone female represented.

Maybe the Girl On Fire was the only one available – or the only one asked. But when “rock’s biggest names” exclude nearly every woman in music, we’ve got to scratch our heads and wonder – why?
